Overview

A smart contract is a self-executing digital agreement written in computer code and stored on a blockchain network. Unlike traditional legal contracts that require human intervention or a legal system to enforce, smart contracts automatically execute transactions or actions once specific, pre-programmed conditions are satisfied. This technology allows parties to interact and exchange value without needing to trust a central authority or a third-party intermediary.

The concept was first proposed by computer scientist Nick Szabo in the early 1990s, long before the creation of Bitcoin. However, smart contracts gained significant traction with the launch of Ethereum, which introduced a programmable blockchain designed specifically to host these applications. Today, they serve as the foundational building blocks for decentralized applications and various blockchain-based services across multiple industries.

How It Works

Smart contracts operate on a simple logic that is hardcoded into the blockchain. Developers write the terms of the agreement in a programming language and then deploy that code to a decentralized network. Once the contract is live, it monitors the blockchain for specific triggers, such as a payment being received or a certain date
