Overview
Cosmos is a layer-1 blockchain launched in March 2019, designed for interoperability between independent blockchains. Its native token is ATOM, and its goal is an "internet of blockchains" where sovereign chains communicate through a shared standard. The Cosmos SDK and Inter-Blockchain Communication (IBC) protocol let developers launch custom chains that can transfer assets and data with one another.
How It Works
Cosmos Hub coordinates the network, and its Tendermint consensus provides fast finality for application chains built with the Cosmos SDK. IBC enables chains to verify each other's state and move tokens and messages securely between them, without a trusted intermediary. This hub-and-spoke model lets each chain retain sovereignty while remaining connected to a broader ecosystem.
Why It Matters
Cosmos pioneered the "sovereign application chain" model, which influenced how many projects think about launching their own networks. IBC created one of the largest interoperable zones of assets in crypto. Its security model, however, means each zone is responsible for its own validator set, so the shared-security properties differ from single-chain ecosystems.
Related Concepts
Cosmos is a Layer 1 with Proof of Stake consensus and is the origin of the Inter-Blockchain Communication protocol. It influenced the Modular Blockchain and app-chain movements and competes with Ethereum's rollup ecosystem for chain sovereignty.
