A zero-knowledge proof (ZKP) is a cryptographic method that lets one party prove to another that a statement is true without revealing any extra information beyond the statement's validity. It is widely used to enhance privacy and security in digital systems, such as blockchain transactions, by enabling verification without exposing sensitive data. Overview

A zero-knowledge proof, or ZKP, is a cryptographic method that lets one party prove to another that a statement is true without revealing any information beyond the statement's validity. In Web3, ZKPs are used to compress computation, verify rollup batches, and protect privacy. They are one of the most impactful cryptographic primitives in the modern blockchain stack.

How It Works

A prover generates a proof for a computation, such as "I executed these ten thousand transactions correctly," and a verifier checks the proof in a fraction of the time it would take to rerun the computation. The proof is succinct and does not reveal the underlying inputs unless designed to. Common schemes include SNARKs, which have small proofs and fast verification, and STARKs, which are transparent and quantum-resilient but larger.

Why It Matters

ZKPs enable ZK-rollups to scale Ethereum, allow private transactions on otherwise public ledgers, and make identity systems that disclose only the minimum required. Their cost is the heavy computation required to generate proofs, though hardware and algorithm improvements are reducing it. As of 2026, ZKPs are shifting from research to production infrastructure.
