Overview

A blockchain transaction is a signed data package that records a transfer of value or a change of state between addresses on a network. Every transaction contains a sender, a recipient, the amount or instructions being executed, a nonce to prevent replay, and a cryptographic signature that proves the sender authorized it. Once confirmed, transactions are permanently recorded in a block.

How It Works

To send a transaction, the user's wallet constructs the payload and signs it with the sender's private key. The signed transaction is broadcast to the network, where nodes validate the signature and check that the sender has sufficient balance. Depending on the consensus mechanism, a miner or validator then includes the transaction in a block, and after a number of confirmations the state change is considered final.

Why It Matters

Transactions are the atomic unit of activity on any blockchain. Understanding how they are constructed and confirmed helps users read explorers, estimate fees, and reason about settlement times and finality. For developers, transaction structure determines how smart contract calls, token transfers, and cross-chain messages are packaged and executed.

Related Concepts

Transactions are the payload that consensus mechanisms secure. Related topics include the Hash that fingerprints each transaction, gas fees that price execution, and the Blocks that group transactions into the canonical ledger.
