Users open payment channels by funding a multisig output on-chain. Within a channel, unlimited transactions can be exchanged off-chain by updating signed balances — only the final state is settled on-chain. Channels connect into a network, and payments route through intermediate nodes (hash time-locked contracts, HTLCs), enabling payments between parties without a direct channel.
