1. What Is a Fraud Proof

A fraud proof is a mechanism in optimistic rollups where anyone can challenge an invalid state transition by providing proof of the error. It is the security backbone of optimistic scaling.

2. How It Works

Optimistic rollups assume state transitions are valid by default and post them to L1. During a challenge window, watchers can submit a fraud proof showing that a disputed transition is incorrect. If validated on L1, the invalid state is reverted and the prover is penalized (slashed). This "optimism + challenge" model avoids verifying every transaction, enabling cheap scaling.

3. Why It Matters

Fraud proofs determine optimistic rollup security: an honest challenger can always catch invalid batches, so even a single honest actor protects the system. They trade off the challenge window (withdrawal delays) for cost efficiency, and they are central to how Arbitrum and Optimism secure billions in assets.

4. Key Facts

  • Challenge windows typically last ~7 days
  • Interactive dispute games (Arbitrum) vs single-step proofs (Optimism)
  • Provers stake collateral that can be slashed
  • Fraud proofs enable trustless rollup security
