Overview

Yearn Finance is a DeFi yield aggregator that automatically moves deposited funds between lending and yield protocols to maximize returns. Launched in July 2020, it became famous for its YFI token, which was distributed to users with no investor sale. Yearn popularized the concept of automated vault strategies.

How It Works

Users deposit assets into Yearn vaults, and the protocol's strategies automatically allocate those funds across the highest-yielding opportunities. When a strategy matures or becomes less profitable, Yearn migrates funds to better options without the user taking action. Depositors receive yield-bearing tokens representing their position and accumulated returns.

Token & Funding

YFI was minted and distributed to Yearn users in one of the first "fair launch" token distributions, with no pre-sale or VC allocation. Governance is controlled by YFI holders, who vote on strategy risk, fee parameters, and treasury allocation. The protocol generates revenue from performance fees on vault deposits.

Risks & Considerations

Yearn's strategies carry smart contract and strategy-execution risk, and historical exploits have affected portions of its vaults. Because it aggregates across many protocols, a failure in any underlying platform can affect vault performance. Users should review the risk profile of each vault's strategies and the protocol's insurance and mitigation measures.
