Overview
A Decentralized Autonomous Organization, or DAO, is an entity governed by smart contracts and community voting rather than central leadership. Rules are encoded on-chain, treasury funds are controlled by the community, and decisions are made through token-weighted proposals. DAOs have become the standard governance structure for protocols, foundations, and communities across Web3.
How It Works
A DAO deploys smart contracts that hold its treasury and define its governance process. Members submit proposals, which are then voted on by token holders, with voting power usually proportional to token ownership or delegated stake. If a proposal passes, it can automatically execute on-chain actions such as transferring funds or upgrading parameters. Off-chain platforms like Snapshot are commonly used for signal votes before on-chain execution.
Why It Matters
DAOs replace hierarchical management with transparent, auditable, and global participation. They align contributors with protocol success through ownership and reduce the risk of a single point of failure. They are not without issues: voter apathy, plutocracy, and governance attacks are real concerns. For users, DAO membership is a way to participate in the direction of the protocols they use.
